Cindy knows Happy Hours! |
The Portland
Happy Hour Guidebook is a wealth of well-organized, useful information for
those who want to enjoy the hot spots of Portland and environs while saving
money.
You never know who you will run into while dining with
Portland Food Adventures. At a recent dinner at Levant, I was seated with Cindy
Anderson, author of The Portland Happy Hour Guidebook. She was taking a break
from reviewing happy hour venues to savor an evening of creative cuisine.
In reviewing her book, the first thing I noticed was that it
was easy to find all the information I needed and more. She has organized the
book by sections of town and has categorized the restaurants. And, then she has
rated the restaurants and bars for everything including atmosphere. She has
motivated me to go out more and spend less.
Cindy has special sections such as listings of brew pubs and
a listing of McMenamin's pubs. And she updates the guidebook each year. I had a
look at the 2013 edition, her 7th.
I found old favorites...
Kell's Irish Pub where, incidentally, Cindy gave birth to the concept of
this guidebook. You can get some great
food deals at Kell's during happy hour. And then there is Salty's on the
Columbia, a favorite of mine, where the fine food and drinks are reasonably
priced from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. Salty's was named the 2012
Happy Hour of the Year.
But the most exciting aspect of the book is that I can explore some new places. One high on my list is located on Officer's Row in
Vancouver, Washington. The Grant House
sounds great. "Inside the grounds of historic Fort Vancouver. Charming,
turn-of-the-century estate (Ulysses S. Grant lived here in the 1850's).
Gorgeous patio or wrap-around porch allows Happy Hour patrons to sit outside
and savor. Worth a trip"
The size of the book is smaller so it will fit in a jacket
pocket or purse. And, Cindy doesn't stop with good advice. She provides
money-saving coupons to some of the most interesting Happy Hour venues.
