Fresh Alaskan Salmon: For those who can't travel to Alaska right now!
I love fishing. But, to my dismay, the temperatures in our local rivers like the Columbia and the Willamette have reached the upper 70's and 80's. Fish are dying. Hatchery personnel are hand-transferring fish for transport to hatcheries with cooler water. While this turn of events is upsetting to those of us who like fresh, wild seafood, other areas are fishing as usual.
When I visited Red Tail Farm in Bend, Oregon to learn about their organic farm practices, I also found out that the farmers sourced their seafood from a company working with fishers who capture the fresh-caught quality of superior-quality, sustainably harvested Alaskan salmon and northwest Pacific seafood by cleaning and flash-freezing it within hours of harvest.
The fisheries that supply much of their seafood are certified sustainable either by MSC (look for their blue logo) or the State of Alaska. The remainder are deemed sustainable by the Monterey Bay Aquarium's SeafoodWatch program.
I was glad to find a reliable source, and they deliver right to my door! So I ordered the salmon. I have been more than satisfied with the high quality wild salmon. Next, I'll try the halibut. Vital Choice is a real find, especially for those of us who can't fish locally and don't have the opportunity to travel north!

Fisherman's Statue - Gig Harbor, Washington
![]() |
| Just to show that it isn't always foggy in Gig Harbor |
In the historic district of Gig Harbor, Washington along the
harbor itself you’ll find Jerisich Park and the adjacent Skansie Brothers Park.
The area is a large, open, waterfront space with grass, decks, benches, and a
covered Pavilion for community events. Here you will find the Fisherman
Memorial. This large bronze statue, which depicts a fisherman hauling in his netted catch, was commissioned in memory of Gig Harbor's fishermen. Gig Harbor has a
history of fishing and boat building. The current fishing boats you see moored
there most likely fish the waters of Alaska.
